The beginnings of the basketball club “Gostivar”, date from the year 1954, when using the name Mavrovo, this club was formed. Ever since, the basketball club has changed its name several times: “Goteks”, “Vardar-Komerc”, “Gostivar”, and its last name is “Nikol Fert”. This club has been very successful. In former Yugoslavia, K.K. Gostivar three times has won the title “Republic Champion” (in 1965, 1967 and in 1968). The club was even successful on Yugoslav level, i.e. in the second Yugoslav league. The best result is in 1964-65 playing season, when Gostivar lost the quarter-final match Vs “Beograd” (Belgrade) (“Beograd” won the championship that year).
Gostivar was the host, of the 1993-94 “Macedonian cup” finals.
Today, K.K. “Nikol Fert” has one of the best basketball teams in Macedonia. Two years ago they won the state championship, and last year were the winner of the “Macedonian Cup”.
